Cause of it:
The cause of this problem is that the light of flash occurs too fast, that the pupil cannot close themselves, so the bright light from the flash enters the eye through the pupil and gets reflected from the fondues at the back of the eye ball and at last out pupil. This reflection is recorded by the camera and is displayed in the photograph. This red colour is mainly due to the large amount of blood in the choroid. The choroid is located at the back of the retina. The amount of the red eye differs from person to person. Because, the amount of the red light reflected out from the pupil depends on the amount of melanin in the layers behind the retina. For example, the person with blue eyes, there is less red eye effect. Also, the photograph taken with the help of infra red light causes more red light effect because the pigments inside the eyes cannot absorb the light very speedily.
The ways to reduce this effect:
1. The red eye effect can be reduced by using bounce flash in which the flash head is focused towards the colored surface like wall or ceiling. This reduces the flash light entering the pupil.
2. Another method which can be used to reduce the red flash effect is to place the flash away from the eye. In this method, the light from the flash is made to enter at an oblique angle. So, the light which hits the fondues and emerges out of the pupil. Because of the oblique angle of the light entering the pupil, the retina will not be visible to the camera and the eyes appear neutral.
3. Also, the red eye effect can be reduced by taking the image without flash. In the absence of flash, there is no light which enters the pupil so fast.
4. Even in modern cameras, there is a facility provided called red-eye reduction. This facility helps the user to adjust the flash power. The low flash power causes less red eye effect. It is quite effective in reducing the red eye effect. There is even a facility provided called autofocus assist beam, which uses a series of flashes for focusing.
5. Even watching away from the camera will help in avoiding this.
6. If we increase light in the surrounding environment, the red eye effect can be reduced.
7. Also, some modern computer can be used in reducing this problem.
Expert's comments:
The professional photographers use ambient light or indirect flash light.
